Verdun

There is something conspicuously different about the WWI monuments. They are somber and strangely anti-national. At Verdun, there were monuments to both French and German soldiers. 

The scale of the French cemetery was numbing. 


At Fort Douaville, you could see the tortured earth from the unrelenting shelling. 

The fort was massive and changed hands twice during the war. 





There were - of course - creepy mannequins....

Grim toilets....

And a glimpse into the abyss.
