The Somme

We went to Peronne to start our tour of the battlefield. Little Man was as game as could be expected. In some ways, he was living the trench warfare experience. 


The museum was solid, and it gave a comprehensive picture of the scope of the carnage. 
The plan was to drive the Route of Rememberance, sometimes called the Poppy Route. 
 
Unlike Normandy, there was something subdued about these monuments. A cluster of graves here. A cross there. A statue by a field. 

And this time the flag flying beside the Tricolor was not the Stars and Stripes.
