The Maginot Line

As you drive through Meuse-Argonne, you see these concrete bunkers in fields and by the roads.

They are the remnants of one of history's great miscalculations. We toured one of the forts. It was a very French tour: French guide, French guests and no sense of hurry. The damned thing took two hours. We therefore couldn't visit Luxembourg and say that we visited Luxembourg.

The hat Peyton is wearing was dropped off the trolley by Lachlan during one of the interminable variations of grab-ass that they have been playing.  Luckily the guide - whose English matched my French - was able to find it in the bowels of the fortress.

The exterior still looks menacing.

And it has a commanding view of the valley.

But the current garrison lacks martial spirit.
The fortresses are truly impressive. And you can see why the French thought they would protect them. Alas....
